June 10 Full-Day AM kindergarten, no school for PM kindergarten June 11 Full-Day PM kindergarten, no school for AM kindergarten June 12 AM kindergarten attends Message from Mme BrookeTree CelebrationThank you to the Outdoor Learning Committee and all of the volunteers who helped bring our VAS Urban Forest Tree Celebration to life yesterday. Prior to the official program, volunteers organized a craft station, seed exchange, and community work bee. We enjoyed mostly pleasant weather and accomplished a great deal in cleaning, maintaining, and enhancing our outdoor spaces. Thank you for your time, involvement, and support! Our Grade 4 students and teachers embraced this learning opportunity throughout the spring. Students participated in three hours of in-class education provided by the City of Calgary to prepare for planting an urban forest on the Varsity field on May 28, 2026. There were also lots of grade 4 parent volunteers who helped us out on the planting day- thank you for your work on such a hot day. Yesterday, we celebrated this achievement with remarks from Elsie from the City of Calgary, as well as Grade 4 students who shared a land acknowledgement, readings, and important messages about respecting and caring for the trees. The Grade 4 students also visited each homeroom class to teach their peers how to care for the trees and the expectations that will help our urban forest grow strong and healthy. Watch for the presentation coming home soon, and take some time to review it with your child. We hope they will share what they have learned about respecting and caring for the trees at VAS. Thank you to our Grade 4 students for their enthusiasm and leadership, and to our Grade 4 teachers for guiding this meaningful learning experience.
Playground FYIHow are replacement public school playgrounds funded in Calgary?School boards do not receive funding for playground construction from the government. It is up to parents of students and members of the community to fundraise for a replacement playground. Playgrounds cost on average $250,000 to $450,000. The Calgary Parks Foundation will provide half of that by matching the amount we raise as a school. There are also other grants available for us to apply for. So, our school will need to raise from $125,000 to $250,000. Physical EducationResults from the 2026 Alberta Elementary School Track & Field ChampionshipsLast weekend, a group of Varsity Acres students participated in the Alberta Elementary School Track & Field Championships. We could not be prouder of the effort, determination, and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the day. This event was open to all students in Grades 3-5. Competing against 46 schools from across Alberta, VAS finished: 3rd Overall School 1st Overall Girls' Team 3rd Overall Boys' Team These results are certainly worth celebrating, but even more exciting was seeing so many students challenge themselves and represent our school community with pride. A huge thank you to our families for supporting their children and helping make participation possible. Events like these are truly a team effort. Looking ahead, we are already planning for next year. Additional track and field equipment has been ordered and will be incorporated into our regular Physical Education programming so that all students can continue developing foundational skills, confidence, and a love of movement. We are also exploring the possibility of a Track & Field Club to help interested students prepare for future competitions. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes—we are incredibly proud of you! Appropriate Footwear for PEWith the warmer/drier weather, many students are arriving with only crocs/sandals for Physical Education. A gentle reminder to check in with your child and ensure they have a pair of running shoes that will provide them the best support for their ankles as we engage in basketball (Grades 4-5) and soccer (Kindergarten to Grade 3) Thank you!
