Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Transportation and Drop-Off/Pick Up

For students registered for the school yellow bus, you will have received your stop time and location information via email from CBE Transportation. More bussing information can be found on the CBE Transportation page.

Parents/guardians dropping off their students at school are asked to respect the parking signage when dropping off their children.  Please do NOT park within 5 metres of a pedestrian crosswalk. Always cross at a designated crosswalk with your children.  Plan your route so that you do NOT perform a U-turn in front of the school.  By practicing these habits at the start of the school year, we can keep all our students, families and neighbours safe. Thank you for your diligence.

School and Community Centre Parking Lots

Students, or families / daycare providers walking students to school, should not be cutting through the VAS or VCC parking lots. We have had near misses where someone almost hit a child they did not see. Student safety is more important than saving a minute or two. If you are walking, please go around the parking lots.

Student drop off and pick up in the Varsity Community Centre parking lot has become quite dangerous. Student safety is everyone’s concern. To help with this:

  • Students should not be running / walking through the parking lot once they get out of the car.
  • Students should be going to the perimeter and then going around onto the school grounds.
  • Parents need to slow down when pulling in and out, as well as watching for students that might be behind the car.
  • Parents need to be patient with one another. We work with students on being kind, compassionate, and respectful and we appreciate your support in modelling this for them.

While the community association allows for students to be dropped off from their lot, it is a public facility and they do have customers and clients that need the lot for their own use. If you can drop of your child off by pulling up on Valiant Drive, giving a quick ‘hug and go’, and then pulling away, this will help to alleviate some of the parking issues.

Staff Parking Lot is Off Limits

Students are not to be dropped off in the staff parking lot. This is extremely dangerous as cars entering cannot see children well if they are passing through.

Does Your Child Get Picked Up?

Students are asked to wait for any caregivers or parents on the compound rather than on the playground structure, especially if getting picked up is a change of routine. This helps us determine if all students have connected with caregivers after the bell.
