Meet the Teachers

We value the connections and partnerships between families and our school personnel in support of student success. We would like to introduce you to the various opportunities that are available to connect with your child’s teacher in the coming weeks.

  • Fall Welcome-Friday, September 20

  • Varsity Acres School-outdoors

Fall Welcome is an annual event presented by Varsity Acres School Council (VASC), and this year we have extended the time to ensure that all families can meet their child’s teacher and introduce themselves. Please join us for coffee, tea, baked goods, and conversation. You are welcome to stop by and leave as it suits your schedule. Supervision of students is provided. We strongly encourage all families to attend this community event, as it is an excellent way to meet teaching staff and other families. Invite –Fall welcome - 2024

To ensure all families can share key insights about their children with their respective teachers.  You should receive an online parent questionnaire from your child’s teacher today.  Please fill out this online form and include any specific information you want to share with your child’s teacher to support a positive and successful learning experience.

  • *NOT Required; only if necessary

Additionally, there are optional Meet the Teacher appointments offered on the evening of Thursday, September 26. Your attendance at the Meet the Teacher appointments is not required. If your child is on an IPP, or if there are critical learning considerations that you’d like to share with your child’s teacher, you may wish to book a meeting.

Kindergarten ONLY-There are no appointments for Kindergarten students, and parents are invited to attend one of two virtual sessions on September 26. Please see the links below:

Formal Reporting of Student Learning Progress-November, March, January, June

Please note that the Meet the Teacher night does not involve the teacher reporting on student achievement. November and March Parent-Teacher Interviews and report cards in January and June are formal reporting times. 

Terry Fox Run

Each September, students and families at Varsity Acres School are invited to join thousands of schools worldwide in the annual Terry Fox Event.  In preparation for the event, students reflect on topics such as Terry Fox’s legacy, meeting challenges, empathy, and setting personal goals.  Students are also learning about a Indigenous runners, including Tom Longboat. You may wish to support your child’s learning about Terry Fox through discussion at home. Further information can be found at www.terryfox.org.

Our VAS run will take place on Tuesday, September 24 at 8:55 am. Please dress for the weather, as there is no rain date.  We are looking for 10 parent volunteers for this event. If you are interested in volunteering and have a current police clearance on file with the school, please email Madame Shana Jolin at smjolin@cbe.ab.ca Volunteers will be taken on a first-come/first-served basis. If you have a child in Kindergarten and wish to volunteer, please indicate this in your email so that we can place you accordingly.

Students and families are invited to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Online contributions are encouraged – visit:  https://schools.terryfox.ca/VarsityAcres. Tax receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for online donations over $20.00.  

New this year, online donations only. We will not be collecting cash donations brought in by students and we are encouraging any donations to be made online.  All monies raised through our event will be to further the cause of cancer research. Thank you in advance in supporting our Terry Fox Run.

The best way to ensure the message is received, please leave a message on the attendance line 403-777-6090 opt 1.  Emails are not reliable as they may not be read in time.

Student Clothing

A few items from the lunch team

Can you label all clothing, including coats, sweaters, hats, shoes, lunch bags and water bottles for your child.  If items are misplaced at the school, we will return the items to their owner.  For their lunch, can you please include the appropriate cutlery.

VASC Meeting

The Varsity Acres School Council welcomes all families to join us for our hybrid VASC Meeting on

Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 6:30 pm.

  • Teams meeting LINK.

We love to hear from families about improving our school community and parent engagement for our students and VASC families!

Also, each year Varsity Acres school council needs to hold an annual general meeting to vote in its members. 

The Role of a school council:

  • Representing and informing parents
  • Advising the principal and the board on matters relating to the school
  • Participating in the development of school education plans, annual education results reports and budget
  • Facilitating communication and supporting parent engagement within the school and school authority
  • Link to Alberta Government Website about School Councils

VASC AGM

This year's AGM will take place on:

Tuesday, October 8 at 6:30 pm

The roles on council to be filled include:

Chair/Co-Chair:

  • chair all meetings of the school council 
  • ongoing communication with the school principal including establishing meeting agendas
  • ensure that the operating procedures are current and followed 
  • be the official spokesperson of the school council 
  • ensure there is regular communication with the whole school community 
  • stay informed about school board policy that impacts school council 
  • provide the school board with an annual report that summarizes the school council’s activities for the previous school year

Vice chair:

  • Support the chair and take on the responsibilities of the chair in the case of their absence. 

Secretary

Ensures that the minutes are prepared accurately to reflect the decisions and discussions from meetings. Provides the minutes for the school to post on the website. 

Other roles we would like to continue with include:

  • Fundraising liaison - someone who can attend meetings and coordinate with VASPFS for budget and volunteer opportunities
  • Communications officer: Create posts on Facebooks/social media and updates communications with the school
  • Volunteer coordinator - organizes the volunteers for school wide events ex) healthy hunger 

Throughout the year there may also be sub committees (Outdoor Learning etc), where there are volunteer opportunities. These positions are not elected. For example - Fall Welcome.
