Youth Singers, Requesting your Input
This December, we are excited to welcome the Youth Singers residency who will be working with our grade 3-5 students. At the end of the week, on Friday, December 6, 2024, we will hold a concert to showcase our students' learning and celebrate their skills! We have received feedback that it is not always easy for families to attend a concert in the middle of a school day.
If you are the parent/guardian of a student in grade 3, 4 or 5, we ask that you please share your input about the timing of this concert by answering this 2-question survey: https://forms.office.com/r/L6Z6MM5Apv
Yellow Steps Residency with Jenn Doeve begins Wednesday, September 25!
We are excited to begin our work with Jenn Doeve's place-based learning. Students will be headed around the school, off-site and around our community to access the curriculum in new and creative ways. The Yellow Steps letter and a reminder of Walking Field Trips are here. Check your child's Google Classroom, and watch for emails from their teacher, for where your child is going and if parent volunteers are required.
Action Required | Deadline Demographic Verification Forms
If you have not yet logged onto School Engage through your MyCBE account to complete this action, please do so. This is a legal requirement on the part of our school and parents/guardians. We appreciate your attention to this. We will reach out next week by phone to those families who have not yet completed this task.
Music Google Classroom is Here!
My name is Mme Forbes, and I am the music teacher again this year. I have enjoyed getting to know your children, and I am looking forward to another exciting year of music.
For those of you who would like to be updated on what we are doing in music this year and some of the songs we are learning, be sure to join your child's grade on the music google classroom page. I have also put a link in each grade with the sign up and access to Music Play, a music site, that includes games, songs, and music theory (solfege and rhythms) for the students to practice and learn.
Thank you, and I look forward to another year of learning and exploring music!

Terry Fox Run
Each September, students and families at Varsity Acres School are invited to join thousands of schools worldwide in the annual Terry Fox Event. In preparation for the event, students reflect on topics such as Terry Fox’s legacy, meeting challenges, empathy, and setting personal goals. Students are also learning about a Indigenous runners, including Tom Longboat. You may wish to support your child’s learning about Terry Fox through discussion at home. Further information can be found at www.terryfox.org.
Our VAS run will take place on Tuesday, September 24 at 8:55 am. Please dress for the weather, as there is no rain date.
We still need volunteers to help with the run. If you are interested in volunteering and have a current police clearance on file with the school, please email Madame Shana Jolin at smjolin@cbe.ab.ca Volunteers will be taken on a first-come/first-served basis. If you have a child in Kindergarten and wish to volunteer, please indicate this in your email so that we can place you accordingly.
Students and families are invited to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Online contributions are encouraged – visit: https://schools.terryfox.ca/VarsityAcres. Tax receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for online donations over $20.00.
New this year, online donations only. We will not be collecting cash donations brought in by students and we are encouraging any donations to be made online. All monies raised through our event will be to further the cause of cancer research. Thank you in advance in supporting our Terry Fox Run.
Reporting a Late or Absence to the School
The best way to ensure the message is received, please leave a message on the attendance line 403-777-6090 opt 1. Emails are not reliable as they may not be read in time.
Late Arrival Procedures
If your student arrives late to school and misses the class lineup, please enter the school through the front door and check in at the office. We kindly ask that you say goodbye at the office, as our staff will be happy to escort your child to their classroom if they need assistance.
This process helps ensure a smooth transition for your child and allows us to maintain accurate attendance records. Thank you for your cooperation!
A Message from the Lunch Team
Students have attended 16 school days thus far, yet our lost and found collection is well over 16 items. The amount of items that accumulates each day is significant and sometimes unmanageable. Most often, items are not collected and they end up as donations to Goodwill. Please support us in keeping the amount of lost and found items low by labelling all items, teaching students how to ensure they have all of their belongings each day, and checking the lost and found table regularly. All lost and found items that are well-labelled are returned to the students regularly. We appreciate your support in minimizing our lost items and ensuring students hold onto their belongings.
