Physical Education
Dear Parents and Guardians at VAS,
I hope everyone is settling into a wonderful start to the school year!
In Physical Education and Wellness (PEW), we will be doing our best to get outside as much as possible throughout September and the first few days of October. As such, please ensure that on days when your child participates in PEW, they have comfortable, supportive athletic shoes that will allow them to move safely and perform at their best. Depending on the weather, you may also wish to send your child with sunscreen, a hat, and/or a light windbreaker. Should inclement weather arise, we will simply pivot and make use of our gym space.
Kindergarten–Grade 2
For our youngest students, we will be focusing on spatial awareness, rules and expectations, and collaboration in outdoor spaces. Our goal is to establish a shared understanding of how to effectively, safely, and actively enjoy the spaces in which we learn and play. Knowledge of these games will also allow homeroom teachers to actively engage their students in Daily Physical Activity (DPA - APQ in French) on days they do not attend PEW with me.
Grades 3–5
For students in Grades 3–5, we will begin the year with a preliminary Track and Field unit focused on physical development, rules and expectations, and goal setting/action planning.
Ideally, students will establish a baseline of their current performance across a variety of skills. From there, they will identify an area of personal interest and establish their own goal for improvement throughout the year.
Importantly, the area they choose to work on will be their choice—not mine!
Using their baseline data, students will develop S.M.A.R.T. goals, devise a plan for how they might achieve them, and measure their growth over time. This will provide opportunities for us to have meaningful conversations about how processes, physical development, and motivation can influence both physical and emotional well-being.
Terry Fox Run
Being outside will also give all students an opportunity to visualize and become familiar with what our Terry Fox Run will look like on September 22nd. Students will have the chance to map the course, consider pacing, and begin thinking about personal goals for the run.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our Physical Education and Wellness curriculum. I am looking forward to an excellent year of learning, movement, growth, and fun with our students, parents, and teachers!
Merci!
Monsieur David
